Patzcuaro is a Magic Town, but not only that, it is the most visited Magic Town in Michoacan. “Noche de Muertos” being the most visited time of the year, however, other dates of the year have increased its tourism enormously. In December 2019 alone, there were around 850,000 visitors, which was 100% more than the previous year.
It is a city with 486 years of history. Vasco de Quiroga lived here, thanks to whom the state had a great development in education, health, commerce and quality of life in general. Several buildings located in downtown Patzcuaro were built by his orders, which means that they are more than 400 years old. Thanks to him, Michoacan is one of the states with the greatest variety of crafts, because he organized the people into trades. That is why near the lake we have the town of embroidery, Santa Fe de la Laguna; the town of weaving, Tzintzuntzan; the town of wood, Quiroga; etc.
We also have archaeological remains of the Purepecha culture very close by, for example, the Tzintzuntzan Yacatas and the ruins of Ihuatzio.
It is a town full of people with deep-rooted traditions, but who do not hesitate to share them with the rest of the world. They welcome people from outside with open arms.
The people of Patzcuaro are very traditional. In spite of the fact that Patzcuaro is a city of almost 56 thousand inhabitants, you can perceive the cozy atmosphere of a small town, full of food and drinks, patron saint festivities, old dances, etc.
Patzcuaro’s land value has grown and continues to grow in recent years. Thanks to tourism and the fact that a large foreign community has chosen this city as their favorite place for retirement. For the same reason, it is not so easy to find land or houses for sale in the center (although there are still some). Some land in the downtown area increased in value by 10% in just a few months.
Why do foreigners prefer Patzcuaro to San Miguel de Allende or Ajijic? In addition to what was mentioned before about the traditions and history of this land, there are other factors that make Patzcuaro the favorite of expats:
- We can mention the space, since, unlike San Miguel, here we do not have serious traffic problems and there is much more room for road expansion. Also, not long ago a highway that connects us more directly to other cities, such as CDMX and Guadalajara, without having to go through Morelia, was built. In addition to the improvements to the highway that connects to Ixtapa and Lazaro Cardenas.
- The relationship between costs and quality of life. Unlike other parts of Mexico, costs of living are lower in Michoacan. Without focusing on specific things, we can say that services, food and entertainment are cheaper than in other states.
- The climate. Even though it tends to be a little colder and rainy than in other parts of the state, Patzcuaro enjoys a climate preferred by most foreigners, since we do not have snowfalls or suffocating hot summers. The cool breezes that run through the mountains cool down on hot spring days and the strong winter sun warms the houses to withstand the cold nights.
Patzcuaro is rapidly developing as a city. We have several of the amenities of a large city, i.e. supermarkets, specialty stores, movie theaters and international food restaurants. For everything we don’t have, we have Morelia only 40 minutes away by car.
We have the best of both worlds. Development, culture and nature all come together in one area of this beautiful state. Among the natural beauties “around the corner from Patzcuaro” are: the viewpoint of “El Estribo”, from where you can admire all the landscape around the lake; the lake of Zirahuen; the lake of Patzcuaro; the volcano Paricutin; among others.
